FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS


1. Can I bring a guest?

Your guest will need to register for the conference and pay the registration fee. Please click here for the registration link.

2. I’m unable to attend on Saturday. Is it possible to register for a Friday master class?  

NO, you must register for the Saturday conference in order to attend a Friday master class. 

3. Can you recommend any reasonable hotels in the area?

4. Are scholarships available for the conference?

YES, Kweli has limited scholarships. If you are interested in a scholarship, you must complete an application form and submit a statement of financial need, a short essay explaining your interest in attending the conference, and a writing or illustration sample. THE DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26TH, 6PM. Please email editors@kwelijournal.org if you have any questions.  

5. I applied for a manuscript critique OR portfolio review. When is the deadline for submission?

DEADLINE EXTENDED. Your manuscript for the critique session must be sent via email to editors@kwelijournal.org by Monday, March 4th, 11:59pm (i.e., 5 - 10 pages ONLY, in standard manuscript format). Include a synopsis if you are submitting an excerpt from a middle grade or young adult novel. When you sign up for a #Kweli19 manuscript critique, you’ll have a chance to win an all expense trip to SCBWI LA in August 2019!

6. What should I expect with the manuscript critique?

The editor or agent you have selected has spent time preparing a thoughtful and carefully considered critique for you. Please listen to the editor or agent closely during the manuscript critique session, without interruption. Once they have finished, you will be able to ask a few questions. Please note that each critique is limited to 12 minutes. Time keepers will assure that the critique sessions start on time and end on time. 

7. Does Kweli have a sexual harassment policy?

The Kweli Conference is dedicated to providing a safe, respectful, and harassment-free conference experience for everyone, regardless of gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, body size, race, age, or religion. We will not tolerate harassment or abuse in any form of conference attendees or presenters. Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately; those judged to violate these guidelines may be expelled from the conference without a refund at the discretion of the conference organizers. Should you wish to report an incident, please approach assistant coordinators Leah Henderson, Cheryl Klein, or conference director, Laura Pegram during the day, or e-mail kwelijournal@gmail.com afterward.

8. What is your cancellation policy?

Effective February 19, 2019, there is an administrative charge of $50.00 for cancellation.

Cancel by February 24th, 2019- Your refund amount is the purchase price, less the non refundable administrative charge of $50.00.
Cancel by March 10, 2019 – 50% credit for a future Kweli event
Cancel by March 24, 2019 – 25% credit for a future Kweli event
No refunds for cancellations received after March 24, 2019
No refund on one-on-one, Critiques, Workshop Intensive fees after March 24, 2019
